Artist Statement
I consider my pieces to be sculptural paintings that are abstract in nature. My particular style is in the realm of Modernism while the painted wood constructions have aspects that are Formalistic in nature.
This is evident in the dynamic angles of shapes, the reliance of color shifts and juxtapositions, the textural play of thick and thin, and the real or illusion of spatial shifts. The 1/4” wood layers of shapes create depth of form and play with both the positive and negative space. I use drawn lines of mixed mediums to then create more dynamic energy and unify the composition.
The compositions are also Formalistic by how I use the shapes to break out of their rectilinear constraints. Some pieces are complete shaped compositions on their own and then some are placed within a framed format to amplify their shaped compositions. Both approaches emphasize dramatic movement and energy.
My work is inspired by jazz and movement and whatever else is going on in my life. This process is an intuitive and improvisational experience.
I use materials such as 1/4” plywood, artboard, acrylic paint, polymer mediums, and various drawing tools. The more dimensional aspects of the materials evolve with my building up forms similar to collage. I play with the space and tease the wall it is hung on.
My ongoing challenge is to marry both the sculptural and painting aspects in a cohesive composition. I attempt to think as a painter and sculptor at the same time within one piece.
